During the winter months it is imperative that you keep warm when going out into the elements. What ways do you keep warm?
Tips to Keep Warm
Take a look at my idea pin below:
How to Keep Warm During the Winter
Good News:
Before I retired I worked in an area of mostly nothing but computers. The area was kept cold winter and summer. I seemingly always had a hard time keeping warm especially in the winter, because I worked in the cold and then left work to walk into the cold. During that time I discovered my feet were staying cold. So I tried a pair of heating pads made just for the shoes. I was in 7th heaven. The heat would last in them for about 10 hours. If you have never tried this and your feet are cold all the time you must get a pair or by in bulk and stock up. There are also heating pads for the hand that you can use in your gloves.
It is so important to keep your hands warm. I recall as a child going to one of my friends house on the other side of town. I was not sure of her address so I asked my aunt to drop my girlfriend and I off at the corner. We unfortunately went the wrong way and by the time we got to my friends house during the cold my hands were frozen. I did not have any gloves on.
I cried because my hands were so cold. It is a time that I will never forget and it was a learning lesson to always wear gloves.
2. Body Heat Loss through Your Head
Do you really lose body heat through your head? I often recall hearing those thoughts in my head of my grandmother telling me to keep a hat on my head during the winter. Health.clevlandclinic.org., suggests you will not squander 50% of your heat if uncapped, but you will lose some. They further add that it is best to wear a hat when it is cold in order to prevent frost bite and that children tend to lose a higher percentage of body heat through their heads, because compared to adults, their heads are bigger in comparison to their bodies.
3. Covering Neck and Face
I have found that when the temperatures drop I can stay warm by wearing a scarf around my neck and face. This is so beneficial. I discovered that wearing it on my face helps me to breathe warm air into my lungs as oppose to the cold air of the elements. Here in Michigan sometimes the temperatures have dropped below zero and that is very cold.
4. Foods to Keep Your body Warm
Did you know that there are foods that will help keep your body warm? Iced Coffee, lean meats, whole grains, cumin, ginger, and bananas are foods that will help keep your body warm according to eatthis.com. I was surprised that iced coffee is one of the foods. They further add that it is not just hot or cold coffee but rather the caffeine which increases metabolism by stimulating the release of fatty acids from the body’s fat tissues, which in turn can increase body temperature. I thought to myself, “This is amazing.”
5. Undershirts
I recall my grandmother always emphasizing I needed to wear an undershirt during the winter time. I thought that was so old-fashion. Now as an adult I realize the importance of it in order to stay warm. I also discovered that a t-shirt worn under my clothing is just as helpful in keeping me warm when out in the cold weather. Also t-shirts come in a range of different colors. I recall growing up having to wear white undershirts. It seems they did not know about any other color but white. Just like white socks. As an adult I only love black socks now as oppose to white socks. And it has been discovered that darker colors retain heat much better according to sciencing.com
6. Drink Water Avoid Alcohol
Do you drink enough water? I drink a lot of water during the summer, but for some reason during the wintertime I need to remind myself to drink enough water so as not to become hydrated. Water helps to regulate your internal temperature and people are less likely to drink water when it’s cold outside, because they don’t feel as thirsty, according to Summit Medical Group; hyrsolutions.com. They further add that whiskey and other kinds of alcohol actually lower your body’s core temperatures.
7. Warm House
How many times have you come home and thought, “It feels good coming into a nice warm house?” Well homestead-acreas.com talks about winterizing your home one a budget. They suggest making sure your doors have a tight seal, sealing up any holes in exterior walls, install storm windows, use heavy drapes and area rugs, and using a programmable thermostat.
8. Keep Moving; Eat More
Of course you know that the body was made to move. Did you know that anytime you get cold, the single best strategy for rewarming is to start moving or increase your pace? The outside.com talks about this. They further add that your body needs more fuel in freezing temperatures to keep your internal furnace burning when you’re out for more than about two hours.
9. More Tips to Stay Warm During the Winter
Have you tried layering your body with leggings or long johns, wearing thick socks and slippers, opening your curtain or blinds to let the sun in during the day, closing off unoccupied rooms, making sure that heat vents or radiators are not blocked, because heat rises try sleeping in the upper levels of the house, and insulating your attic? These are all suggestions from cnn.com.
Again I ask how do you keep warm during the winter?

Nancy that sounds like a great Idea. Thanks for stopping by.
I started wearing a t-shirt under my sweaters. this has made a huge difference. And I like to wear thick socks with slippers when I am at home. Before wearing slippers, my feet would always be cold.
Take care and best wishes.
Those are great points Debra. Thanks for stopping by.
We had a super mild winter in Central Texas, thank goodness!, but I was cold now and again inside the house. I resorted to wearing socks with my houseshoes and a sweater over everything. We used the oven for meal and a crockpot - that kept the kitchen fairly warm. Before bed, I enjoyed herbal tea. ZZZZZZZ
We definitely wear lots and lots of layers! We also rely on our woodstove to keep the house toasty warm.
Gina so glad to hear that you had a mild winter. I am so looking forward to the summer. Thanks for stopping by.
Joanne I hear you. I wear a lot of hoodies during the winter time. They really are quite warm. Thanks for stopping by.
