5 Signs You May Be Dehydrated

Is there a possibility that you are dehydrated? Do you know the signs of dehydration? Could the symptoms you are having be related to dehydration of your body?

Severe Dehydration

***Good News***

1. What is Dehydration

When your body is loses more fluid than you take in dehydration may occur. That is why it is so important to drink enough water. According to nhsform.scot water makes up over two-third of the healthy human body and when the normal water content is reduced, it upsets the balance of minerals (salts and sugar) in your body, thus affecting the way it functions. They further add that one warning sign might be a dry mouth.

2. Urinating (Peeing) a lot

Do you urinate a lot? According to wedmd.com Diabetes and some medications like water pills can make you pee more often but can also add to hydration if you are not drinking enough water. They further add that headaches can be a sign of mild hydration.

3. Symptoms by Age

An infant or young child may exhibit symptoms of dehydration when no tears appear when crying, sunken eyes, cheeks, whereas an adult may exhibit symptoms such as extreme thirst, dark-colored urine, dizziness, and confusion. This is according to mayoclinic.com and they further add you might want to see a doctor if you have had diarrhea for 24 hours or more, you are irritable or disoriented, can’t keep down fluids, or have a bloody or black stool.

4. White Tongue

Have you heard of white tongue? It appears as a white coating on the tongue’s surface caused by debris, bacteria and dead cells that become lodged and inflamed. According to gohealthuc.com the primary causes are dehydration and dry mouth.

5. Muscle Cramps

When your body loses enough fluid, it is unable to cool itself off adequately, leading to heat illness. Everydayhealth.com talks about this. They further add that muscle cramps can happen while exercising particularly in hot weather.

Treatment for Dehydration: What You Can Do

Re-hydrate:

What is re-hydration? Re-hydration is drinking plenty of fluids to re-hydrate your body.

A. Pedialyte

Pedialyte is a quick way to rehydrate. It’s ingredients include sodium (sodium chloride, sodium citrate), potassium (potassium citrate), chloride (sodium chloride), it comes in various flavors as well. Static.abbottnutrition.com adds that it is number one pediatrician recommended, is good for adults as well as children, provides glucose to promote sodium and water absorption, 1000-ml reclosable plastic bottles for easy measuring and pouring, freezer pops available in 4 flavors, and it comes ready to use with no mixing or dilution necessary.

B. How Long Does It Take to Rehydrate?

That is a good question. Did you know that it takes approximately 15 minutes for your body to absorb the fluid, but when you are dehydrated, it can take about three times as long (45 minutes) for fluids to make their way from the stomach into the bloodstream and to the rest of the body according to reduceeveryday.com

C. What About Coffee and Tea?

You might ask the question, "What about coffee and tea?” I once told a friend, “You do not drink enough water.” The response to me was, “ I drink plenty of coffee.” I went further to explain that coffee is not the same as water and works as a diuretic to the body taking water out of the system quickly as well as some vital vitamins that the body may need. Heathline.com mentions that drinking coffee and tea in moderate amounts can be as hydrating as drinking water, but caffeine becomes dehydrating only in doses of  around 25-300 mg, the equivalent of two to three 8 ounces cups of coffee or 5-8 ounces cups of tea. So this is something very important to look at as far as equivalents.

D. Water Reminder App

If you are anything like me you may forget to drink enough water. I especially tend to forget about drinking water during the winter months while I have not had problems in the summertime during the hot weather. Did you know that there are actual apps to help remind you to drink water. Google Play has a free water reminder app that helps you select your cup, daily goals, and set the times to remind you to drink water. This app is just bitter sweet. Also there are various other apps available to remind you to drink water.

E. Various Foods

Did you know that there are certain foods that can help you with hydration? Yes, what about starting your day with oatmeal? Possibly sipping on smoothies, packing your plate with vegetables, or freezing your fruit. Medexpress.com mentions this.

F. Zucchini

Did you know that one cup of zucchini contains 95% water and contains 1 gram of fiber that keeps you feeling full. Wedmd.com talks about this. They further add that cucumber is 95% water, tomatoes are a rich source of water, watercress, apples, celery, and lettuce makes up over 95% of raw lettuce. This reminds me of my

Awesome Shrimp and Vegetable Dish

When I started making this dish I did not understand why no water was needed with the vegetables and the sausage. Then as I did more research I realized that the zucchini contained lots of water so no water is needed in the dish. It is amazing.

G. Watermelon

Did you know that watermelon is 91% water? This is according to heathline.com. They further add that watermelon is a good source of potassium, vitamin C and a decent source of several other vitamins and minerals including Vitamin C, Potassium, Copper, Vitamin B5, and Vitamin A.
