Hello everyone. Today at this Meet and Greet we will be talking about Independence Day. July 4th is a day of celebration.
Declaration of Independence
***Gratitude***
On Independence Day you will see various types of celebrations such as fireworks, parades, picnics, and much more, but we must always remember how it is that Independence Day was started. Because of the Pandemic you might not see any parades and the Fireworks have been cancelled in our city, but there have been many personal fireworks going on for several days. As a child I always remember the 4th of July as a day that we ate barbecue. I really love barbecue. I would look forward to that day all year long. I was not thinking about the Independence of the Country that I lived in. I remember sometimes doing a count down until the 4th of July day was here.
I recall my first time barbecuing on the holiday as a teenager. I thought I was helping my Aunt out. That was when I realized that that was something I enjoyed doing at the time. Besides eating it, I loved to help grill. Now there are many restaurants that have taken advantage of selling barbecue near the holidays. You will see many vendor trucks selling barbecue as well. Now since we are in a Pandemic you might not see vendor trucks. They could have made a handsome profit I am sure doing this time. Why who does not like barbecue?
1. Juneteenth, June 19, 1865
Before Independence Day was another great day called Juneteenth. According to nbcnews.com Union General Gordon Granger led thousands of federal troops to Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended and the slaves had been freed. They also add that there were 250,000 Texan slaves that had no idea that they were free. As I listened to an interview on television one day, the lady being interviewed mentioned that some of the slaves had no idea what they would do or where they would go since they were free. Many of them had lived in slavery most of their life. This is so sad to imagine going through life like that. Juneteenth is still celebrated yearly by many. It is an awesome part of History that should never be forgotten.
2. History
According to History.com, On July 2, 1776 Congress voted in favor of American Independence from Great Britain and took it a step forward to become a Federal Holiday in 1941. So regardless of the problems that we have in America, we are somewhat better off than other countries as far as freedom. Have we arrived? Certainly not. There is always room for improvement in our country. Thank goodness for activists and others that have fought for the rights of Americans in this country.
3. America
Have You Ever Thought About how America got it’s name? According to blogs.loc.gov. America was named after Amerigo Vespucci and Italian explorer.
4. Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus sailed across America in 1942. I was even taught in school that he discovered America and it has been declared a National Holiday, according to Cnn.com Christopher had been considered to play a role in the violent colonization, including racial equality, at communities expense.
5. American Flag
There are those that have the American Flag in the front yard, some have the flag on their house, some have the flag on their cars, and on Independence Day you definitely will see a lot of flags flying. Have you ever thought what the American Flag represents? What about those stars, stripes, and red, white, and blue? According to pbs.org., the 50 stars represent the 50 states, and the stripes represent the 13 colonies; the colors are significant in that the red symbolizes hardiness, the white purity, and the blue represents justice.
I have observed that the flag is very significant in military funerals and you will see it folded very neatly. There is a certain way and technique to fold the American flag.
6. Flag Burning
According to en.wikipedia.org., flag desecration is a violation of flag protocol. They also add that in some countries burning the flag in public is prohibited. What is your view on this? There are those that go to extremes believing that they have the freedom to do this in America. Maybe the flag does not mean anything to them. What does the flag mean to you?
7. Parades
As a child I loved the parades. I remember when my aunt was in the Mason’s we would go to Canada where she would March in the parades. I loved how colorful the parades were. I thought parades were ever so exciting.
8. Fireworks
Something that I have observed is that many people are not waiting until the 4th to start the fireworks. In my neighborhood I can hear and see fireworks weeks in advance of the 4th of July. I guess it has happened so often that I have become accustomed to it. I definitely looked forward to the fireworks. I always thought the bigger the better. I loved going to the beach and downtown to see the fireworks, but I also recall being able to see them from my house. I thought that was neat. I still love to see the fireworks. There is something about the big bang and all the bright colors. Beside the fact that fireworks have become traditional for the 4th of July according to Time.com fireworks can be traced back 2000 years in China and even 600AD to 900 AD. They can be expensive too. It is commonplace to see selling of fireworks before Independence Day. You may see sellers at various corners displaying their products. Now with the new age of the internet many products as well as decorations can be bought online.
