It is very important to remember to vote. The election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump was and is a big deal. Emotions may be high. Your candidate either won or your candidate loss. Still it is very important to always vote and take a stand so that your voice is heard.

Voting is a right and a privilege. I remember growing up looking forward to be able to vote. I once asked my aunt the difference in Democrats and Republican. Her reply was, “When the Republicans are in office there are no jobs or money available.” I have also heard when the Republicans are in office the richer get richer and the poorer get poorer. You can decide for yourself how true this may or may not be. I remember voting for the first time. There may be many different events where a vote is required. I believe a major voting event is the Presidential election. I could not imagine all of the decisions that a President is faced with day to day.

1. Women

There was a time in history when women were not allowed to vote. According to History.com there was a time a married woman could not vote, but also could not own property and had no legal claim to any money she might earn. Can you imagine? They further added that the 19^th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which was ratified on August 18, 1920 granted women the right to vote. Now today women are CEO’s and owner’s of their own companies. So women definitely should exercise their right to vote. I cannot imagine not having the right to vote. Can you imagine?

2. African Americans

The 15^th amendment granted African Americans the right to vote in 1870 According to History.com. Now this amendment also states it is to be revisited every 25 years by Congress and voted on. So if Congress decided to vote against it, that would set African Americans back. Even though this Amendment was done there were other discouraging factors of discrimination against African Americans such as literacy test, poll taxes, and other discriminatory practices.

3. Why Voting Is Important

Did you know that your voice matters? Voting is important because it gives you a voice in decision-making, influencing policies and laws, it holds leaders accountable, it reflects the will of the people, it honors the struggle for suffrage, and it fosters civic engagement. This is talked about at Headcount.org.,/voter/education. Apparently the will of the people reflected that they wanted Donald Trump as President. I am sure every individual had their own reasons for whom they may or may have not voted for. Sometimes it may not always be important to win, but rather to look forward and keep focused on where the country is headed. Hopefully, the country will be headed in the right direction. I am sure every person believes their candidate is the right candidate.

4. Change

According to Altame.org., voting is an opportunity to make a positive impact in your community? They further added that there are many social issues affected by elections, including (but not limited to) gay marriage, immigration, reproductive rights, public education, etc.

5. Electoral College Facts

Ever wonder about Electoral votes? Well according to history house.gov. Most states require all electoral votes to go to the candidate who receives the plurality in that state. After the state election officials certify the popular vote of each state, the winning slate of electors meet in the state capital and cast two ballots; one for Vice President and one for President.

6. Voting Early

What are your feelings about voting early? I like the concept. I observed in my family that my children and most of my grandchildren voted early, whereas my husband and myself voted the day of. My reasoning is that the earlier voting site was not near us, but rather downtown. Our actual voting site is really close to us. Also, I realized when I did go to the polling site, I actually like the voting experience as oppose to dropping off my ballot. I am really proud that some of my grandchildren first time voting made the effort to vote. I am proud that most of my children voted earlier. I am definitely proud that they all made the effort to vote and get involved.

My one grandson was so involved he was involved working canvassing neighborhoods regarding people voting. I am very proud of him.

7. My first voting experience

I recalled when I turned 18 I was proud to vote. I loved the voting experience then and I still love it now. Sometimes my candidate might win other times my candidate may not. When it comes to politics people sometimes have to agree to disagree, but it is so important to have the talk.

8. Community Mandate

Do you know another reason that it is important to vote? Your vote is more than an individualist pursuit, but rather a community mandate to strengthen the political climate to be more reflective of the issues that matter most to unrepresented communities. Naacpldf,org., mentions this. They further add that it is a reminder that the social contract does not equally protect everyone, but, through voting, people can make their collective voice strong enough to force democracy to listen.

As I said earlier we may sometimes agree to disagree, but it it important to start the conversation and for each side to listen to the other.

9. Jim-Crow Era Law

Exactly what is the Jim-Crow Era Law? After reconstruction of the 15^th Amendment several southern states enacted laws that restricted Black Americans’ access to voting. Those actions included poll taxes, literacy tests, all-white primaries, felony disenfranchisement laws, grandfather clauses, fraud and intimidation to keep African Americans from the polls.
