Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October)

This is the month of Breast Cancer Awareness. Most likely you or someone you know has had Cancer. Do You Know the theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023? What can you do to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Breast Cancer Wreath

***Good News***

The theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023 is, “No One Should Face Breast Cancer Alone,” according to ihs.gov.

1. Your Nails

For those of you that love to have your nails done, you might want to use Breast Cancer Awareness designs on your nails as a way to show support. This is also a constant reminder of the importance of awareness.

2. Wear Pink

Have you thought about wearing Pink during the month of October? Maybe you do not have any pink clothing in your wardrobe. This would be a good time to go shopping for pink outfits. Even men have gotten into the act of wearing pink.

3. Wreaths

I love various wreaths for the decor of my house. My favorite is the Breast Cancer Awareness Wreath. I ordered my wreath from Amazon. I am very happy with it, because the wreath is actually a lot larger than I had anticipated.

4. Cash Money

I recall sitting with a chemotherapy patient during therapy. That patient received money from another. It was enough for a Mortgage payment. I thought, “How kind is this?” It was not expected, but was given with great love. So cash money is always a help to someone going through Cancer.

5. Scarfs

Patients that are going through chemotherapy may experience hair loss. There are so many beautiful soft scarfs that are available now for them to wear.

6. Sit With A Cancer Patient During Treatment

If you have a relative or friend that is going through chemo treatments, just sitting with them during the treatment, can give them great support. Sometimes the chemo treatments may be just about 20 minutes during a session, while at other times, it may be up to 3 hours or more. Every patient’s timing and situation may vary. If you have never gone through this, you can learn a lot just sitting and talking with others that are going through this.

I recall an acquaintance that shared with me of going to her Cancer treatments by herself. I was so surprised because I knew she had relatives. She shared that that was the way she wanted it and she was okay with that. She was now Cancer free and okay. This let me know that everyone approaches their  Cancer differently and I should respect that.

6. Mastectomy Care Kit

Although a Mastectomy is a radical surgery, there are those that elect to have it. I recall the article where Angeline Jolene shared that she had the rare Cancer gene BRCA-1 so she elected to have a double Mastectomy. New York times.com talks about it. Should you know someone that has elected to do this, you may want to offer them a Mastectomy Care Kit. According to sparklesofsunshine.com this kit might include throat drops to sooth the throat after surgery, lip balm, cleansing wipes, dry shampoo, a neck pillow, bendable straw, slipper socks, a button-up shirt, a small pillow for under the arm, and a magazine or books.

7. Blogging

Blogging like I am doing also promotes Breast Cancer Awareness. Posting to your Social Media Sites creates more exposure for Breast Cancer Awareness.

8. At Work

You could wear a pink ribbon to work to promote Breast Cancer Awareness, add pink to your office, or add pink background to your blog or website.

I recall our director of our choir giving the members pink ribbons to wear during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

9. Walking or Running

Several cities promote Breast Cancer Awareness by promoting marathons. People can walk or run to promote Breast Cancer Awareness.

10. Breast Cancer in Men

Are you aware that men may get Breast Cancer also? A male child of a man with breast cancer who inherits the defective BRCA2 gene has only approximately 6% chance of eventually developing breast cancer and just over 1% with BRCA1, a female child of a man with breast cancer who inherits the defective gene has a risk between 40% and 80% of eventually developing breast cancer, and men with a genetic predisposition to breast cancer (carrying BRCA2gene mutation) are also at higher risk of getting prostate cancer at a young age than usually diagnosed, as well as being at higher risk for melanoma and pancreatic cancer according to nationalbreastcancer.org.

11. FDA Approves New Drug

Did you know that HR-positive/Her2-negative tumors are the most common subtype of breast cancer according to the National Cancer Institute and everydayhealth.com? They further added that the FDA approved Trodelvy for adults with advanced HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer that can’t be completely removed with surgery and that has not been eradicated by chemotherapy or endocrine therapy.

12. Advances In Technology

3-D Mammography, also called breast tomosynthesis is an advance technology that takes images from different angles around the breast and builds them into a 3-D-like image even though it isn’t known whether it is better than standard 2-D mammography for detecting cancer at a less advanced stage according to cancer.gov.

13. Wearable ultrasound Scanner

News.mit.edu talks about a designed wearable ultrasound device that MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)  researchers have designed to allow people to detect tumors when they are still in early stages and it could be valuable for patients at high risk of developing breast cancer in between routine mammograms. They further add that the new device can be incorporated into a bra and could allow more frequent monitoring of patients at high risk for breast cancer.

What other new Technology regarding breast Cancer could you share today?

Thank you for bringing this subject to the foreground, as its something very close to my heart as I have lost my mother and my sister is a cancer survivor. Cancer is high profile in our family so I thank you for sharing your links with us at #282 SSPS Linky. See you again next week.
