What You Should Know About the Omicron Variant

 Are you aware that even though a vaccine has been developed for COVID-19, we are still in a pandemic. The new Omicron Variant may be twice as deadly.

***Thoughts***

1. Omicron Variant starting point

According to business-standard.com the super mutant Omicron strain first emerged in late November in South Africa and Botswana. It has since spread to more than 100 countries. They further add that data from studies in South Africa, the US and the UK has shown that Omicron causes mild illness, as well as causes lower hospitalization rates, but it is still too early to affirm how severe Omicron is.

2. Symptoms of Omicron

According to marca.com the Omicron has proven to be more transmissible than any to have come before and symptoms can range from headaches, muscle aches, runny noses, sneezing, lower back pain, night sweats nausea, hair loss, conjunctivitis, coughing, a fever, and a slight loss of smell and taste.

3. The Spread

According to cdc.gov the Omicron variant likely will spread more easily than the original SAR-COV-2 virus and they suspect that anyone with Omicron infection can spread the virus to others even if they are vaccinated or don’t have symptoms. So whether vaccinated or not it can still be spread to others but if you are vaccinated the likelihood of hospitalization is lower. Our hospitals in Michigan are overflowing. Just imagine having to sit in the Emergency Room lobby for your emergency because no rooms or beds are available. That is imaginable.

4. New Symptoms

According to nbcnews.com they are seeing a lot of sore throat, runny nose, fatigue and mild headache. They further add that while omicron doe not burrow deep into the lungs, it can however, replicate faster higher up in the respiratory tract.

5. Statistics

According to fortune.com United State cities is averaging more than 400,00 cases per day according to the New York Times, despite 62% of the population being fully vaccinated. At the same time deaths from COVID have decreased 3% in the United States with the highest national average for daily cases was set in January 2021, at 251,232, in the days following the holidays.

6. Who Do You Know?

Do you know of friends or relatives that have had COVID OR OMICRON and became ill or died from it? When it happens to someone that you know it becomes quite personal and quite real. You never want to be in that situation, but unfortunately there have been many that have been in those positions.

7. Children Hospitalization Rates

COVID-19 hospitalization rates among children are soaring in the United States, averaging 4.3 children under 5 per 100,000 according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is critically important that we surround our youngest children who are not yet eligible for vaccination with people who are vaccinated to provide them protection They further addeded.

8. Fast Spreading

As of January 2022 Omicron accounts for about 98% of all new COVID-19 cases in the country according to childrens.com. Dr. Kahn states, “This variant is spreading like wildfire.” It is further stated that although most children have mild illness and are able to recover at home, you need to watch for the following warning signs that your children requires emergency care:

* Trouble breathing

* Persistent pain or pressure in the chest

*New confusion

*Inability to wake or stay awake

* Pale, gray or blue-colored skin, lips or nail beds, depending on skin tone

* Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears, decreased urination) or inability

to take liquids by mouth

I just cannot imagine a child dying before it’s parents, but it is happening.

8. Croup

COVID-19’S omicron variant is affecting children under age 5 in a new way. The omicron tends to settle higher up in the respiratory tract and little kids airways are so narrow that it takes far less inflammation to clog them according to Dr. Buddy Creech, a pediatric infectious disease expert and director of the Vanderbilt Vacicne Research Program at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. This as reported on nbcnews.com.

9. Unvaccinated TikTok User

Don’t wait until it is too late. Megan Alexandra Blankenbiller pleaded to her TikTok followers to get the vaccine. She regretted that she did not get the vaccine in time and she was only 31-years-old at the time of her death. She had made the appointment to get vaccinated, but became seriously sick before that time. According to npr.org she shared on a video to her TikTok followers. I still cannot imagine, because even though she was 31-years-old, she was someone’s daughter and someone’s sister. That had to be a tremendous loss.

10. Long-Term After Effects of COVID-19

According to the Mayoclinic.org there are several lingering effects older people and people with many serious medical conditions may still experience after COVID-19 infection. They are as follows

* Fatigue

* Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

* Cough

* Joint Pain

* Chest Pain

* Memory, concentration or sleep problems

* Muscle pain or headache

* Fast or pounding heartbeat

* Loss of smell or taste

* Depression or anxiety

* Fever

* Dizziness when you stand

* Worsened symptoms after Physical or mental activities

They also added that COVID-19 can cause damage to the heart, kidneys, the brain, and blood clots and blood vessel problems.

So the possible after effects of this infection seemingly can be very serious also.

 11. FREE at home test kits

According to Cnbc.com free at home COVID-19 test kits are now available through the new federal government website. They can be mailed to your door by just clicking on this site:

Covidtests.gov

There is a limit of 4 kits per household, but now you will have the availability to test yourself in your own home. Some states like Florida have people lined up for tests because there are not enough sites available for the people. Also, in some states you cannot get an appointment for testing for at least several days. I have already ordered my free kits. When will you order yours?
