During today’s Blogger’s Meet and Greet I will be discussing Valentine’s Days During the Pandemic. A great thing about Valentine’s Day is that young and old can celebrate this.
Valentine
***Good News***
Do you remember how Valentine’s Day was celebrated when you were in school? Do you remember bringing home lots of Valentine Candy and cards.
History
According to the History Channel some believe Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate Valentine’s death around A.D.270. They further add that Valentine was a priest in Rome and Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Fauns, the Roman god of agriculture. In addition, in the 18th century there was mass-production of Valentines card.
When I was in school as a child I remember bringing cards and candy to school to exchange with my classmates. It was a great time. As a child I did not know the why of Valentine’s Day, but I loved that it did exist. Since Covid-19 open school is not the same. Instead there is more remote learning.
CUPID:
Have you ever wondered who Cupid was and how Cupid is a part of Valentine’s Day?
According to Wikipedia.org., Cupid means passionate desire, erotic love, attraction and affection. They further add he was portrayed as a chubby boy that acquired a bow and arrow which represented his source of power.
The cbc.ca/kidscbc2 states that some legends says that Cupid carried golden arrows to make someone fall in love, but he also carried another kind of arrow that had a blunt lead tip that would make people fall out of love. They further add that during the 14th to 17th centuries, painters created arts of work showing Cupid as a baby angel and this same version began to appear on Valentine’s Day cards during the late 1800s.
According to History.com Cupid’s mother, Venus (Aphrodite), became so jealous of the beautiful mortal Psyche that she told her son to induce Psyche to fall in love with a monster. It was further added that instead, Cupid became so enamored with Psyche that he married her- with the condition that she could never see his face; but Psyche stole a glance and after cupid fled in anger she searched until they were reunited and granted the gift of immortality.
OTHER COUNTRIES:
A. France
We are not the only country that observes Valentine Day. According to Huffpost.com in France men and women filled houses that faced one another, and then took turns calling out to one another and pairing off. Men who weren’t satisfied with their match could simply leave a woman for another, and the women left unmatched gathered afterward for a bonfire. They further add threat during the bonfire, women burned pictures of the men who wronged them and hurled swears and insults to the opposite sex. This became so uncontrollable that the French government eventually banned the tradition all together, but Valentine’s Day cards remain a popular tradition in France. I can see why the previous tradition would be banned I am sure there may have been many scorned women that had many swears and insults to proclaim.
B. Italy
Today Italians celebrate Valentine’s Day with gift exchanges between lovers and romantic dinners. One of the most popular Valentine’s Day gifts is Bali Peru gin, small chocolate-covered hazelnuts wrapped with a romantic quote printed in four languages.
C. South Africa
In South Africa it is customary for women in to wear their hearts on their sleeves. Women pin the names of their love interest on their shirtsleeves, an ancient Roman tradition known as Lupercalia.
