Is changing the clocks twice a year worth it? Do you know when daylight savings time started in the United States? Does Daylight Savings Time affect your sleep?
Think About This. . .
***Purpose***
1. Who created Daylight Savings Time?
In 1895
George Vernon Hudson, a postal worker from New Zealand made this proposition so
that he would have more daylight hours to devote to his passion for studying
and collecting insects, but in 1907 William Willett published a brochure called
“The Waste of Daylight” advocating the benefits of adjusting clocks. This is according to historycooperative.org.
2. Daylight Savings Time in the United
States
Did you know
that daylight savings time started in the United States in 1918 during World
War 1 for the purpose of conserving fuel?
3. Safety
According to
scienceinsights.org., daylight savings time reduces crime, lowers traffic
fatalities, and gives people more usable daylight after work and school. Whereas it has been explained that farmers
follow the sun not the clock and when humans move their clock forward their
production gets disrupted and the milk truck still arrives on the clock, which allows
the dairy farmers no flexibility to keep things moving.
4. Mental Health
What about
your mental health. Did you know that
sleep disturbances and the stress of adjusting to daylight savings may affect
your mental health. Housely.com talks
about people often feeling more anxious or depressed during this transition
making it harder to feel balanced. I
can attest to this. When the clock is
changed my body still wants to remain on the say old routine and it takes a
while for me to adjust.
5. Daylight Importance
What is the
importance of daylight? It has been
scientifically proven that natural lighting helps people become happier, calm,
healthy and productive. Aydinlatma.org. further suggests that daylight improves the
overall health and circadian rhythm of building occupants. I love the daylight and I can see why
switching the times every year can be concerning for our bodies. My body feels it.
6. Permanent Daylight Savings
Time
Permanent
daylight savings time will provide Americans with greater consistency, more
usable daylight in the evening, and the certainty that comes with ending the
twice-yearly clock changes. Usnews.com
talks about this. I can see this. Changing time twice a year just messes with
the body.
7. Living by the Sun and Moons Rhythm
Have you
ever thought about how we survived before daylight savings time? Before daylight savings time we depended on
the sun. There are those that could tell
you about the time by the way that the sun rises, because clocks were not
invented until the 13th and
14th century according to nigms.nih.gov.
8. Will Trump End Daylight Savings
Time?
This is an interesting question. Usatoday.com
mentioned that in Trump’s first term in March 2019 he shared on social media
that he fully supported making daylight saving time permanent. In another post in 2024, Trump said he
supports eliminating the time change. They
further added that the Daylight Act of 2026, would change the 1918 law and
permanently adjust American time, per the legislation. Republican Greg Steube, R-Florida, in early February,
introduced the bill that would move the United States time zones forward 30
minutes and leave them there permanently.
9. On the Winter Solstice?
What happens
after the winter solstice? The winter solstice occurred on Sunday, December 21,
2025, at 10:03 am., the shortest day of the year. Starting Monday, December 22,
the days started getting longer, and the sun was higher up in the sky. The darkest afternoon was on December 7
thanks to the lag between the days variable lengths caused by our planet moving
at different speeds in our orbit. This
is talked about at almanac.com. They
further added that daily daylight increased by 3 minutes per day in March,
depending on your location.
10. Candles
Could you
imagine telling time by a candle? During
the middle-ages this is exactly how they told time. The burning of a candle is a predictable
thing. People could measure time by
marking candles by the hour. Medievalists.net talks about this. When a candle had burned down to a certain
mark, that meant many hours had passed. Can you imagine?
11. Spring Forward
What does spring
forward during Daylight Savings time mean?
It means losing an hour and according to usatoday.com Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public
Health states this has caused disrupting sleep patterns for over 300 million
people, risk of mood disturbances, hospital admissions, as well as potential
car crashes. I know that is right. I
have noticed even though the time changes my body does not seem to be aware of
that and wants to reside on the old schedule.
Now they further added that not all United States observe daylight
savings time. Hawaii and most of
Arizona do not observe daylight savings time.
I would not be offended if my state was added to that list. In fact, I would really like it.
12. Circadian Rhythm
How
important is your circadian rhythm? Your
circadian rhythm is the pattern your body follows based on a 24-hour day. In other words, your body’s internal
clock. What happens when your circadian
rhythm is disrupted? Light and dark affect
your circadian rhythm. It affects your
food intake, stress, physical activity, temperature, overnight or off-hour work
shifts, travel, certain medications, mental health conditions, health
conditions involving your head or brain, and poor sleep habits. I can identify with several of these.
I recall
when cross-training at my previous employment, part of my cross-training
involved working all 3 shifts. Well,
everyone teased me regarding third shift, because every night while working at
exactly 3 am I became very sleepy and had to fight to keep my eyes open. I will
never forget working that shift. That
was an eye opener for me.
What are
your thoughts? Do you want Daylight
Savings time to stop?
