8 Reasons There is Power in Movement

Did you know that every step is a reminder that you are still here, still growing, and still moving toward your purpose?

 Did You Know?. . .

***Purpose***

1.       Let’s Move into Schools

I was so happy when Michelle Obama launched the “Let’s Move” Action in the schools.  We were raising the most sedentary generation in history.

Obamawhitehouse.archives.gov talks about this.  They further stated that the let’s move action empowered schools to find free or low-cost ways to incorporate movement before during, and after the school day.

2.       Staying Active

How active are you?   Do you sit around watching television all day?  Are you sluggish and do not feel like moving?  Did you know that physical activity has its benefits?  They are as follows:

It helps you feel better, function, sleep better, sharpen learning and skills as you get older, reduce cardiovascular disease, reduce the risk of infectious disease, strengthen bones and muscles, decrease the risk of falls and hip fractures, increase chances of living longer, and reduce pain.  This is talked about at cdc.gov.

3.      Why Move?

Have you ever asked the question, “Why should I Move?”  Did you know that you don’t have to move perfectly, but rather just keep moving.  Those small steps can lead to big changes. I recall when in the hospital after the birth of one of my children.   The patient in the room with me had had a caesarian delivery.   She complained about the pain and although the nurses encouraged her to get up and walk, she refused.   So, I asked her about her baby.   I suggested she walk down to where the babies were and show me her baby.  She got up and walked down there with me despite her pain. I was happy for her.  For those of you that have been in the hospital have you noted that right after many operations they encourage you to get up and walk around.   They encourage movement right away.  This does make sense.   If you note when dogs have their babies.  They get up and walk that same day.  They understand the importance of movement.

Did you know that more than 2600 people ages 60 and older were followed for nine years?    Those who sat for an average of about three hours a day were 33% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease. Health.harvard.edu talks about this.   They further suggested setting a reminder to get up at least once an hour, making multiple trips from your car to your home to put up your groceries, and standing up and walking while talking on your cellphone.  It is also a good idea to park farther away from the store when shopping.   This forces you to walk more.

4.        Daily Movement

Did you know that you can sneak movement into your daily schedule by setting an alarm on our watch or phone as a reminder, taking a yoga or dance class, take 2 minutes to get up and move, go shopping, clean house, be playful with your dog, do yard work, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and making it a point to take the first step.  Goodhousekeeping.com talks about this.

 5.      Why is Movement So Important?

Movement is important because excess sitting now is linked with many diseases and conditions, including obesity, hypertension, back pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease and depression according to Mayoclinichealthsystem.org. They further added that excessive sitting is a fairly new problem in human history.  Two hundred years ago, 90% of the world lived in agricultural communities with people sitting for three to five hours per day for breaks from work.   Today Americans sit for 13-15 hours per day.

  6.     Movement and Your Mind

What does movement have to do with your mind?  According to pyschologytoday.com movement is one of psychology’s most underused mental health tools.   They further added that when you move you feel better and when people feel better about themselves, they often experience fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety.   That makes sense.   Have you ever felt like you did not want to go somewhere, but you went anyway and afterwards you were glad you went instead of staying home watching television?

 7.      Find What Moves You

Do you know what will help you to move?  You may need to experiment and find out what works best for you.   For one person it may be jogging and for another it may just be walking around the block or in the park.  For another maybe it is just doing housework around the house.   Maybe you just like doing stretches.  I recall a friend who had hip surgery.  I remember the nurses telling him when he got home, he must get up and walk around every hour.  I also remember when he was in the hospital the day after the surgery the nurses had him up walking.  That is just how important movement is.  You no longer stay in the hospital beds.  In fact you no longer stay in the hospital for days at a time unless necessary.   Many surgeries now are done on an outpatient basis.

8.      Your muscles and your Bones

Why is movement important to your muscles and your bones?  It is important because regular movement tells your body that you need to repair-grow your muscles, regular activity maintains a low but important level of muscle tone that makes you look less soft and more athletic, regular daily activity will send signals for the strengthening these crucial tissues, daily activity helps speed up the strengthening process of your ligaments, inactivity causes loss of density while regular exercise and movement improves bone density, and moving everyday causes you to build strength, control, and familiarity.  This is talked about at thehealthhub.com.
