Definitely, feel free to take advantage of this FREE networking opportunity.

I recall growing up with my pet dog. She would even walk with me to the corner store and sit patiently outside until I came out of the store. I decided when I became an adult to get a dog for my children. It almost felt like an adoption. My children and I searched the newspaper and found a baby Doberman. When we went to see her and pick her up, we were able to see the Mother and Father of this baby Doberman. Out of a litter of about 6 or 7 she was the only Red Doberman. My children knew immediately that was the one they wanted. We decided we wanted her to have a biblical name. They decided on Gabriel naming her after the angel Gabriel from the bible. We often called her Gabby.

Little did we know how attached we would become to Gabriel. My children were always hugging Gabriel and telling her positive things. Gabriel just appeared to love this. She became a large dog weighing 94 pounds, but she was always loving and very affectionate and gentle with the children. She was an excellent watch dog and very protective of them. I was so happy.

My children told me that the dogs become alert when they heard I was coming home from work. They had me watch from another room as they said, “Mama’s here.” As they said that both dogs ran to the window looking out anxiously.

When we took her to the vet the vet was cautious because of her size and because we had another dog a Toy Poodle that did not like needles. The Toy Poodle would have to be muzzled to take her shots. Surprisingly Gabriel sat calmly and seeming looked at me and took her que from me. The doctor gave her her shot and she did not even flinch. I was relieved and so was the Vet. Gabriel was like one of the family.

1. Pets Response

According to marthastewart.com in 2019 a review of roughly 70 years of research discovered that owning a dog lowers your risk of dying (from any cause) by 24 percent. They further added that some studies show that dogs recognize and respond to their owner’s faces, voices, and smell with a joyfulness that can be compared to that between parents and children.

2. Loneliness

Did you know that owning a pet can make you feel less lonely? That is according to momfabulous.com. She further adds that studies have found that pets help children with ADHD and can increase your focus and concentration when working from home.

3. What About a Cat?

Have you ever observed a cat purring. I recalled feeling the vibrations when putting my hand on my cats side. Dr. Axe at draxe.com states purring is often compared to rhythmic chanting, which is used in different cultures to aide in healing creating a meditative or calm state. They also added that this brainwave entertainment involves an individuals synchronizing with a periodic stimulus (vibration, spud, light); thus a cat purring can lull a person into relaxation.

4. Dogs are Social Beings

Did you know that dogs get lonely too? There have been times that I would hear the neighbors dogs howling. They are kept outside in a dog house outside. It would bother me because they sounded so intense. I hoped that they were okay. I decided to research why dogs howl. This is what I found.

Dogs are extremely social and love spending time with their owners and that they can have separation anxiety. Pawcastle.com also added that dogs howl at night to express their feelings of loneliness and sadness, especially if their owner is absent. I recall visiting my daughter that had 2 small dogs at the time. She left the house to go somewhere. All of a sudden her dogs were frantic. They would run to me and then back to the window whimpering. I thought to myself, “I cannot help you.” I did, however, try to console them, and kept reassuring them. “She will be back, it is okay.” They did not believe me and continued this behavior until she returned.

I have seen how animals experience loneliness. When my daughter was married, we all traveled from out of state and stayed at the hotel where the wedding would be. My daughter with the 2 dogs brought her dogs and booked them at a nearby doggy motel. We went the next day to visit them and walk them. They were so happy to see my daughter. They were jumping all over the place.

5. Socialization

Did you know that owning a pet increases your human connections and increases your opportunities for socialization according to sparkpeople.com. They further add that although working form home can be quite isolating, a pet lying quietly by your feet while you work at your desk can be quite consoling when you take time out from work with your pet.

6. Therapy Dogs

I recall when at the pharmacists in line, a lady was behind me with a stroller. When I turned around I observed she had 2 small dogs in the stroller. She explained to me they were her therapy dogs. Kmvt.com states that Kimberly Elementary schools uses therapy dogs to welcome the children back to school. They also added that the therapy dogs are great for the counseling departments and the therapy dogs are of great use for small groups and individual things.
