What Order Do You Eat Your Food?

Have you ever thought about the order that you eat your food? Do you believe it makes a difference? Should there be a certain order to eat your food?

Something to Make You Smile:

***Good News***

I discovered that the order in which you eat your food does make a difference with your body. I basically would eat a little of everything on my plate and eat part of my desert with my meal. I never thought about the order.

1. Blood Sugar

Health.com talks about sequencing your food which can possibly affect your blood sugar. They suggest eating fat and protein before carbohydrates. They further added that a study done in 2022 evaluated how eating vegetables before carbohydrates impacted blood sugar among people with type 2 diabetes. I had never thought about this.

2. Breastfeeding

For those of you that are breastfeeding, I discovered when taking the LaLeche classes that the order that you eat your food is the order that the baby receives it when you breast feed your baby. I remember being told that cabbage and broccoli can make your baby gassy. I get that because broccoli makes me gassy. I also remember being taught that chocolate is a “no-no”, because it acts like a laxative for the baby. Think about it when you nurse your baby the baby can get most of it’s basic nutrients as well as antibiotics from your body to protect it.

Unfortunately, I learned the hard way about chocolate. I love chocolate and actually forgot that I should not eat chocolate. Anyway I ate a candy bar. As I nursed my baby, “poop” started coming out of her diaper. It was all in my lap. She just happened to let out a load. I had no one to blame, but myself. It was a great learning lesson. I never ate chocolate again when nursing my baby.

3. Timing

Have you heard the expression “Timing is everything.?” That is true. Eating fiber first (vegetables), then protein and fat, and finishing with carbohydrates could be beneficial. This order could slow the speed that your stomach empties and help lower your blood sugar levels. Bannerhealth.com talks about this. I have tried this method and I have to admit I feel the difference. Since this is new to me I find myself occasionally forgetting and resorting to old habits such as eating my meat first. I know that with practice I will get this right. It just takes time and persistence. Old habits may be hard to break, but they can be broken.

4. What are Protein Foods?

Do you know what protein foods are? According to Webmd.com the top 10 protein foods include fish, seafood, skinless, white-meat poultry, lean beef (including tenderloin, sirloin, eye of round), skim or low-fat milk, skim or low-fat yogurt, fat-free or low fat cheese, eggs, lean pork (tenderloin), beans and lentils, and nuts and seeds.

5. Nutrient Sequencing

GMA (Good Morning America) talks about some data that actually suggests that if you preload your meal and start with the fiber-which could be raw vegetable—then move to the lean protein and healthy fat, and then at the end go to the carbs-- like bread or pasta-- it can stimulate that (glucagon-like peptide 1, or) GLP=1 hormone. This hormone regulates sugar, digestion and appetite.

6. Weight Loss

Did you know that there is a best time to eat for weight loss? Yes if you are trying to loose weight eatingwell.com suggests there is some evidence that suggests that eating most of your food earlier in the day, going lighter at your evening meal and leaving at least 12 hours between dinner and breakfast may have some health benefits which include enhancing weight loss.

7. Restaurant Ordering

Can you order healthily at Restaurants? Lynnecohenfoundation.org., suggests checking out the green options at a restaurants, possibly asking for veggie sticks, check out the menu online before going to the restaurant, request the dressing for salad on the side, sometimes an entire meal can be made from sides, and drink a glass of water before your meal. I also have observed that many restaurants are making it a point to serve healthier foods to customers. I love salads. I will eat salads until I get to the point I am tired of them and then give them a slight rest.

8. Combining Foods To Improve Digestive Health

Can you combine food to improve digestive health?  Did you know that protein is slowly digested in the stomach and small intestines, carbohydrates are digested fast in the mouth and small intestine, fat is the slowest digested in the small intestine, and food coats your stomach in the order that it is digested? Livefitfood.com talks about this. They further suggest that when large amounts of foods are consumed in one sitting, your stomach acid has a hard time breaking down all of the food you just ate; thus possibly leading to bloating, gas, pain, etc. Can you identify with this? Have you ever eaten so much that you feel as though your stomach is about to bust? That is a very uncomfortable feeling. They go on to talk about eating fruit on its own preferable before a meal and that melon should always be eaten separately. I have also learned the hard way which foods do no agree with me and I make it a point to avoid those. Sorta like you live and learn.

I also remember being at an event ordering fried chicken wings when I was younger. An older lady behind me told me, “When you get older you may not want to eat those fried chicken wing.” I did not have a clue as to what she meant, but now after researching and experiencing a few things, I understand what she meant. Fried foods are not necessarily the best foods even though that may be what we like. Then again, everything in moderation. Have you tried food sequencing? What do you think?
