9 Good Habits to Choose Now. . . It’s Your Choice

Did you know that habits can be changed? You do not need to accept bad habits? You have the choice to choose good habits.

                                                    The Surprising Power of Habits

                                               ***Good News***

The power of habits can be quite surprising. Whether bad or good it is important to be aware of the habits you want to change or develop.

1. Present

Did you know that being in the present can be a good habit? That is according to dariusforoux.com. How many times have you just focused on the past? How many times have you mainly focused on the future to the point that you neglect the present? Have you been guilty of focusing on, “I will be happy when I get that job or raise?” “I will be happy when I find that perfect someone.” I can say I have been guilty of focusing on the future and also delving to much in the past. It is good to have goals, but never forget about the present. There have been those that lost a loved one. They may have been so busy focusing on their lost that they forgot about their present loved ones. Sometimes you may struggle to find a balance.

2. Starting Small

According to declutterthemind.com starting small can be a good thing to develop good habits. Remember not to try and sprint, but think of it as a Marathon. Learn to pace yourself. They further suggest trying right brain activities such as meditation, painting, drawing, gardening, cooking, and family hangouts. I recall my daughter spoke of how going to the beach and gardening was very relaxing for her. I had never really thought of that until she mentioned it.

3. Replacing a Bad Habit

I recall a wise person telling me that when trying to rid yourself of a bad habit be sure to replace it with a good habit. I totally agree with that. Some bad habits could have possibly formed without being aware of them at the time. So when you decide to change those bad habits remember there are so many good habit choices that are available to you. You may need to find which good choices are best for you.

4.  Walking

Walking is one of my favorite good choices. After getting out of an abusive relationship I started walking. I discovered I felt so good after walking. It is something that I have continued now throughout my life. I discovered it is free and does not cost me a cent. I can choose my own time and place. Healthline.com suggests that running just 5 to 10 minutes each day at a moderate pace may help reduce your risk of death from heart attacks, strokes, and other common diseases. I have previously walked anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour when walking with relatives. You can choose what is best for you. You don’t necessarily have to walk everyday. You may choose to walk just several times a week.

5.  Daily Affirmations:

Have you looked in the mirror today and told yourself, “I Love You?” According to medium.com they recommend doing this daily because it’s powerful too. They further add that a Duke University 2006 study found that up to 45% of all your daily behaviors are automatic. I daily repeat my my favorite scriptures daily. I do have more than one. One of my favorites is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It is very important what you say to yourself. Sometimes you can be your worst enemy if you put yourself down. I have heard people call themselves “stupid.”

6. The Power of I Can

I have heard it said that employers are looking for employees that have an “I Can” attitude. The employer wants to know what are you going to do for the company?

I recall when in college our class was given a silver can with silver flowers with an inscription on it that says “ SUCCESS COMES IN CANS. . . NOT CANT'S.” I still have that can and I look at it often.

7. Making Your Bed

Do you make your bed up as soon as you get up? I do. I never thought about there are those that never make their beds up. I can understand if you and your spouse work different shifts and he is in the bed when you go to work, but it never occurred to me there are those that never make up their beds. Now according to onmycanvas.com if you want to change that just make up your bed as soon as you get up. They further add it has been proven to give a greater sense of well-being.

8. Good Hygiene

You would think that people naturally would practice good hygiene. I have been in a room where there were those that repeatedly did not.  Practicing good hygiene can contribute to good health and it is important and help promote how powerful first impressions are. I recall being in an enclosed room and there was this foul odor. I mentioned it to others and wondered where it was coming from. Several friends pulled me aside and told me it was a certain person. I did not know this person that well but I told them why someone had not told this person, because it was offensive. They explained that they had and it still continued. I was speechless.

9. 80/20 Rule

Have you heard of the 80/20 Rule? This rule means that in any situation, 20% of the tasks yield 80% of the results. So according to forbes.com you can maximize productivity by investing most of your time and energy on those specific tasks that will create the biggest impact. This is just another habit that you you could choose to develop if you are trying to increase productivity in an area.
