Did
you Know that this is Black History Month? There are numerous Black
Historical women and men that you probably were not aware of. I
want to take the time to mention just a few of them.
Barack Hussein Obama |
1.
Marie Van Brittain Brown (1922-1999)
Did
you know that the first home security system was invented by a Black
nurse by the name of Marie Van Brittain Brown? Her original
invention consisted of peepholes, a camera, monitors, and a two-way
microphone. Finally was the alarm button when pressed would
immediately contact the police. In addition her patent laid the
groundwork for the closed-circuit television system used for
surveillance.
2.
Alexander Miles (1838-1918)
Although
John W. Meaker patented the first automatic elevator door system, the
elevators required the doors and the shaft to be manually opened and
closed. Miles patented the electric-powered elevator doors on
October 11, 1887 (U.S. Patent 371,207).I am so glad he did. I could
not imagine having to open and close an elevator door manually every time
I was on one. I recalled as a small child I was so afraid to ride
the elevator. When the elevator would move downward it felt as
though I was dropping into a pit. Miles was born near Circleville,
Ohio. He married Candance J. Dunlap from New York City, New York in
1870. In 1884 Miles erected a three-story brownstone building in
Duluth. It was shortly after that time that he developed his concept
to improve the function of the elevator door.
3.
Madam C.J. Walker (1867-1919)
Madam
Walker was the first black woman millionaire in America who started a
successful line of hair care products. After looking for treatment
for hair loss, she developed her products and sold them to black
women. Her business employed over three thousand workers, mainly
door-to-door saleswomen. She
funded scholarships for women at Tuskegee Institute and donated large
sums to the NAACP, the black YMCA, and dozens of black charities.
How many other black inventors are you able to think of?
4.
Barack Hussein Obama II (August 4, 1961)
He
is an American attorney and politician who served as the 44th
President of the United States from 2009-2071. He inspired many
voters young and old to make it to the polls to vote. Obama not only
served one term as President, but two terms. Among many of his
accomplishments he graduated from Harvard Law School, became a civil rights
attorney, and represented the 13th district for three
terms in the Illinois Senate from 1997-2004. While he was President
some of his accomplishments included the Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), reduced nuclear weapons with the
United States-Russia New START treaty, Advocate for gun control, and
much more. Besides this President Obama can sing. He has an
awesome voice. Al Green does not have anything on him. He is still living and his legacy with go down in History. How many other great people can you think of?

Very nice. Marie Brown is in a little power point I did for my students. Could you email me, so I can send you this power point?
I had not heard of a few of these women; thanks so much for sharing with us at Encouraging Hearts and Home. pinned.
Fascinating! It's unfortunate that traditional education has neglected the stories of people of color. So much good history here today!
