Explore a new hobby (Did you know?)

Did you know that by trying something new, you might discover a passion you never knew you had?

Did You Know?

***Purpose***

1.  Health Benefits of Hobbies

Do hobbies improve health?   Indeed, they do.    Hobbies boost well-being, lower stress, support mental health, and strengthen relationships.  This is talked about at webmd.com.   I like the part about improving relationships.

I once volunteered to tutor adults.   I had no idea the relationships that would be developed from that.  That summer I worked on a project with several other volunteers including teachers.  Our task was to develop motivational strategies for the classroom.  We also co-authored a book that summer called “Try it—You’ll Like it!”  I was also known as Betty Ryan  at that time.  See our book below:

                                          Try It- You'll Like It!

Seemingly our group of 5 was a very good fit.  Despite my full-time employment, I discovered that volunteering provided significant advantages for both me and the students.   I recall I was going through divorce and my present pastor always emphasized when you are helping others it is a good way to heal because you are not focused on yourself and your pain.  I always remember that teaching.

       2. Gen Z Hobbies- Gaming

Have you heard the saying “different strokes for different folks?”  Did you know that gaming is a hobby for some Gen Z’s?  Gaming has provided a way for gamers to play on the go and connect with friends anywhere, anytime, it is a powerful tool for social connection, it allows connection with peers from around the world, fostering friendships and cultural exchange, coding and app development satisfies their curiosity about how things work and empowers them to create their own digital solutions.  This is according to wokewaves.com.   Who would have known?

       3. Film Photography

Did you know that Film photography which is something that Baby Boomers were doing is now an attraction for a hobby with Gen Z?  Yes Vegoutmag.com talks about this.  They noted that 23-year-old Sydney Daniels told the Valgary Journal, “I like the vibe of the disposable film cameras with the flash.”

I have observed this with my grandson.   He has a passion for photography.  Photography today is increasingly digital.   I must share this with you.   I was at an event with my grandson, and he mentioned that he did photography.   An older gentleman asked him about his dark room for his photographs.  As this older gentleman had done photography at a business he worked at previously in the past.   My grandson looked at me sort of puzzled and told the older gentleman, “I don’t use a dark room, my photographs are all digital.”

      4. Roller Skating

In addition to providing physical exercise, roller skating can serve as an enjoyable hobby for individuals across generations, including both Gen Z and Baby Boomers.   I love roller skating and I started my grandchildren skating at a very young age.   My grandson has become so skilled at skating he can practically dances on his skates. I am so proud of him.   To my amazement I have seen many baby boomers that can do the same.   I have a niece that dances on her skates and now takes her grandchildren skating.   Skating is an activity that people of all ages can enjoy and excel at.

See the video below of my grandson skating:

       5. Jigsaw Puzzle Competition

Did you know that jigsaw puzzle competitions are hobbies for some?  You race against others to complete identical puzzles as quickly as possible.  Most competitions feature puzzles with 500 to 1,000 pieces, and championships draw participants from more than 40 countries, according to freshhobby.com.

         6. Robotic Fish Racing

Do you possess a strong orientation towards technology?    Well Robotic Fish Racing may be just for you. You build small underwater robots that look and move like real fish using servo motors and waterproof electronics. You control them with wireless signals and building a robotic fish requires basic knowledge of circuit boards and motor control. Freshhobby.com suggests you can start with kits that cost between $50 and $200 or design your own from scratch.

        7.  Remote Car Racing

Have you raced remote cars?    Remote car racing is considered a sport by many.  To win a race, it requires the right mindset, training, the right vehicle, and the top driving skills.  This topic is discussed on racenrcs.com.  They further add that there are enormous tracks for RC (remote cars) all over the world.

         8.  Rock Painting

Are you artistic?  Have you ever considered rock painting? You can paint rocks with designs like M&Ms, minions, cactus, aliens, strawberries, and more, as listed at fabulesslyfrugal.com.   I have seen flowers painted on rocks.   There are endless ideas as to what you can paint on a rock.

        9.  Quilting

Have you considered quilting?  Quilting is a patchwork of creativity and tradition.  This hobby involves meticulous planning and stitching.  Quilting circles foster community, sharing techniques and stories.  Mamabeanparenting.com mentions this.   She adds that quilts are heirlooms, not just blankets, passed down with care.

I recall my grandmother making quilts.  Also, my mother-in-law made beautiful quilts.  I still have one that she made. It is beautiful.  My sister-in-law was very upset when she gave it to my husband and me.    She said she had wanted that quilt.   My husband started to give it to her and I told him to keep it and that his mother gave it to him because she wanted him to have it.   My husband was the oldest son of 11 children.  I told him his mother knew what she wanted to do.  She also was in sound mind when she did it.  I reminded him that she gifted it to him.

What is your favorite hobby?  If you do not have one possibly now you might think about getting one.
