Do you use voice recognition? What do you feel the benefits are? Have you considered the pros and cons of voice recognition?
***Intentional***
1.
A Few Pros and Cons of Voice Recognition
Voice recognition technology enables hands-free operation,
enhances accessibility for individuals with disabilities, offers time-saving
features, supports multilingual communication, and provides convenience in
daily activities, according to prospluscons.com. They further
add the cons include privacy concerns, accuracy and misinterpretation, limited
use in noisy environments, potential for security vulnerabilities, and
accessibility barriers for non-native speakers.
I can really
identify with privacy concerns. Besides
the fact that the voice is listening in the environment, there is no privacy
around others. That is most distracting
for me. I do, however, use voice
recognition for watching my television pictures. It's annoying to repeat myself because
voice recognition often misunderstands me and gives unexpected results. So, I
practice remembering to enunciate.
Beyond Voice Recognition:
2.
Hands
Free Driving
Beyond voice
recognition is hands-fee driving.
Although I will use cruise control I continue to keep my hands on the
wheel. I am not quite on board with hands-free
driving yet.
3.
Digital
Tools
Why are
digital tools important? Digital tools
make work faster and easier, they improve how companies operate and make
decisions, they aid in decision-making, and much more according to
digital-adoption.com. Are you aware that you are using digital tools? Some examples of digital tools include,
Google workspace, Microsoft Office 365, Zoom, Video calls, chatting, sharing
files, MailChimp, HubSpot, buffer, Shopify, One Drive, and YouTube, according to pwskills.com. Do you recognize any of these? I love Microsoft Office 365. Technology is advancing rapidly. The iPhone you purchase today can be outdated
tomorrow.
Do you
remember when iPhones came out? They were free. Now they are $1,000 or more. What was free is no longer free.
4.
Security
How is voice
recognition used for security? Research.aimultiple.com
talks about a person’s speech to authenticate them. Users might be required to
say their name aloud during log-ins rather than typing a password. They further added that speech biometrics can
be used to authorize transactions and verify that they are authorized by the
account owner.
5.
Learning a New Language
Were you
aware that voice recognition is used to teach a new language? Learning apps such as Babbel, Audio notes, Rocket
languages, Rosetta Stone, and many more all use voice recognition. Fluentu.com talks about this. They further added that the app provides a
flexible study option which means you can cram in a little extra speech
practice whether you are waiting in line at the store or relaxing in bed.
6.
History of Voice Recognition
The first
voice recognition was designed by Bell Laboratories in 1952 and it could
understand 9 digits spoken by a single person.
Ten years later, IBM developed Shoebox, which could perform mathematical
functions and process up to 16 words in English. G2.com talks about this. In
the 1970s and 1980s (DARPA) the United States Department of Defense and Defense
Advance Research Projects Agency launched the Speech Understanding Research
(SUR) Program. This program gave birth to the Harpy speech system capable of
understanding 1,000 words. In 1990 and
2000’s several applications like Dragon Dictate, Plain Talk, and Via Voice by IBM
were launched. These applications were
able to process nearly 80% of human speech. By 2009 Google launched Google
Voice for IOS devices. Three years
later, Siri was born. They further added that some of the companies that
provide accurate voice recognition are Google voice, Open Text Corporation,
LumenVox, Sestek, and Acapela Group.
7.
Voice Recognition vs Speech Recognition
Is there a
difference between voice recognition and speech recognition? Voice
Recognition you will use with devices like Amazon Alexa or Google Dot, it
listens to your voice in real-time and responds, it has limited functionality,
usually restricted to specific tasks. Whereas (ASR) Automatic Speech
Recognition recognizes speech. It uses
natural language processing, it can accurately generate a transcript of audio,
creating real-time captioning, but is not 100% accurate. Verbit.ai further states it can contain many
errors although it is fast and inexpensive way to convert speech to text.
Whether you want it or not it appears it has been integrated into many facets of our lives. 1,000 or 100 years ago who would have thought? You may not use social media or even watch television, but many businesses are using this.
Also, have
you noticed when using your gps (global positioning system) that some of the
streets are mispronounced? For Example,
Grand Blanc, Michigan is pronounced on the gps as (Grand Blonk) instead of
Grand Blank. Clio, Road is pronounced (Klee- 0 Road instead of Kly-0 Road. I guess that is a subject for another post.
8.
Online Banking
Does voice-enabled
online banking exist? It sure does. According
to some reports, banks in North America allocated over $20 billion in 2017
alone to incorporate voice recognition into their apps and services. Fireflies.ai further added that major payment
companies like Venmo and PayPal, as well as banks like N26 and Bank of Canada,
offer customers the option to process transfers and payments using voice assistants
like Siri. I have found this to
especially be true on the weekends, such as on Sunday. It has become increasingly rare to
encounter a live person available for direct communication. It seems like that is a thing of the past. I truly miss talking to a live person on the
weekend if I have a problem regarding my banking. At least some banks are open on Saturday just
not on Sunday.
