When Thanksgiving arrives, what will you be thankful for? Are you aware that not all countries celebrate Thanksgiving? Have you heard of global gratitude?
Think About This. . .
***Intentional***
1.
The Netherlands
Did you know
that the Netherlands celebrate Thanksgiving because before settlers even set
foot on United State land, they rested in Leiden- a city in the Netherlands
before completing their journey. The
pioneerwoman.com further added the Netherlands take the day to meet in
Pieterskerk, a staple church in the country, to honor the efforts of those who
helped start the voyage to America.
2.
In America
Thanksgiving
Celebration in America is almost a 400-Year-Old Tradition. Visittheusa.com further added that people eat
large amounts of turkey, the President Pardons a turkey, people shop ‘til they
drop, and people travel to visit their families. I also have observed some families do not do
the traditional turkey eating, but rather eat ham, tacos, or other
non-traditional meals. There are those
that do not even like turkey. There are
those that have traditional Thanksgiving Service at church for Thanksgiving
also.
3.
Viet Nam
Thanksgiving
in Viet Nam is celebrated on the 15th of the eighth luna cycle
around the end of September or the Start of October. The Tet-Trung-Thu Festival coincides with
the end of harvest and because parents were so busy working in the months
ahead, the festival was started as a way to show appreciation to the children,
showering them with love and holding a candlelit procession at dawn in their
honor. This is talked about at Housebeautiful.com.
4.
Liberia
Liberia
shares the holiday timing with American Thanksgiving with church services
followed by auctions of fruit baskets filled with papayas and mangoes. Instead of turkey, Liberian Thanksgiving
tables feature spicy roast chicken, mashed cassava, and traditional dishes like
jollof rice.Crystal-travel.com talks about this. They further state it is a lively occasion
marked by food, music, dancing, and a deep sense of community.
5.
Norfolk Island
Have you
heard of Norfolk Island? According to History.com
Norfolk Island is a remote Island in the Pacific Ocean with Thanksgiving
tradition that dates back to the mid-1890’s.
Parishioners on the island celebrate the holiday today bringing fruits,
vegetables and cornstalks to decorate the church and singing American hymns on
the last Wednesday of November each year.

Where
did the tradition of breaking the wishbone come from? The tradition of breaking the wishbone came
from Italy. It is said to date back to
around 800 BCE, to an ancient Italian civilization known as the Etruscans. They would dry the chicken bones and then
touch them (not break them) for good luck.
At the time, Etruscans believed that birds were oracles capable for foreseeing
the future, so by touching their bones, people could manifest good things for
their own futures. Countryliving.com notes that the
Romans adopted the custom of the wishbone; rather than simply touching it, they
would compete to break it apart. The person who ended up with the larger
portion was thought to have their wish granted. Now that is
what I remember as a little girl. Making
a wish and attempting to break off the larger portion of the wishbone.
d.
The Final Trivia Question is What president
refused to declare Thanksgiving a holiday?
The answer is Thomas Jefferson. His
reasoning was that he believed firmly in the separation of church and
state. Since Thanksgiving involved
prayer and reflection, he thought designating it as a national holiday would
violate the First Amendment. He also
thought it was better suited as a state holiday, not a federal one.

celebrate Thanksgiving? Poland’s
Thanksgiving or harvest is called Dozynki and was started in the 16th
century according to en.homes.com. This
originally was a time for landowners to show gratitude and share the bounty of
the harvest with the workers who helped grow the crops. The celebration was marked by dancing,
feasting, and the creation of harvest wreaths, which were believed to bring
fertility and blessings for the next harvest.
The First
Thanksgiving
Do you know
when the first Thanksgiving occurred?
History.com talks about this. In
November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful,
Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of
the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief
Massaoit. They further added that the
festival lasted for three days and there is no existing record of the first
Thanksgiving’s exact menu. Because the
Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall
of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts which are so
popular today at Thanksgiving dinners.
