Messy Room, Clear Mind

Not everything has to be perfect to be meaningful.  Progress over perfection.  Why do you keep a messy room?  Do you want to change?

Is This You?

***Purpose***

1.     A Messy Room and Your Mental Health

Did you know that a messy room may be a sign of depression, sign of feeling overwhelmed, or a sign of your preferences?  Verywellmind.com talks about this.  They further added that possibly you have a type B personality which suggests that you are more relaxed and not focused on achieving perfection like a type A personality.

Are you a parent that has a child that keeps a messy room?   I recall I had a child that kept a messy room and when I told her to clean her room this is what happened.  It would appear clean, but when I opened her closet door everything fell out on me.

2.     Emotional Attachment

People who developed anxious attachment styles in childhood, typically because a caregiver was inconsistent in meeting their needs, are more likely to seek emotional comfort from material objects.   Scienceinsights.org., further added that a room full of objects you can’t bear to part with maybe less about the objects themselves and more about what they represent emotionally: security, memory, connection to people or times that feel uncertain.

3.     Change

Are you a messy and want to change?  One of the best books that I have read was Messie No More by Sandra Felton.  A few take aways from this book that I loved was as follows:

    a. To keep my house clean, clean something daily in each room, preferably something different each day.  Instead of allowing clutter and things to pile up.

    b.  Life is not a sprint, but a marathon.

    c. A messy house is frequently the result of a messie’s effort to stay in control of their life.

    d. Reasons to get the house under control is so the house will look better for company, so the house will look nice for you, so the house will work better, so you will not have to work so hard, and to reduce the feeling of helplessness.

Also I remember reading in this book that messy’s tend to want to hold on to things and keep it in clear sight in the event they may need it, as opposed to filing it or putting it away in a specific space.  Is this you?

4.    Clutter Affects Your Brain

Are you aware that clutter affects Your Brain?  Clutter can cause visual overload, attention splitting, stress response, and decision fatigue.   Myhealthopedia.com further adds that clutter reduces focus, fuels procrastination, affects sleep quality, encourages unhealthy habits, and affects memory.

5.     Depression

Could a messy room be a sign of depression?  According to verywellmind.com it could be a sign of depression because depressed people often feel too fatigued or hopeless to keep up with the routine of household tasks.  They just do not have the energy to straighten up the room.  They further added that a messy room may be a sign that person is feeling very overwhelmed with the clutter.

6.     Consignment Stores

I often took my children's and grandchildren's clothes to consignment shops. I discovered some of the shops were very cluttered and not well-organized.  I discovered I could not stand that clutter, because it just bothered me.   Eventually I stopped going to some of them.   There are also retail stores that have special deals where they bring items out already boxed.   Those that are always looking for a deal seemingly love it.   That particular type of clutter is not worth the deal to me.   I just cannot stand it.  So, I discovered clutter is not just in individual houses, it carries over into the stores.

7.     Emotional Attachments

Do you have sentimental things that you are emotionally attached to?   Do you keep boxes of clothes saying that one day you might wear that?   Do you have a problem with letting go of materials things?   Do you look for sales to save things just because they are on sale?   According to nuvancehealth.org., talks about this.   Eventually, these treasures become cluttered.   An alternative to holding on to this stuff is possibly taking a picture and saving it.  You still have memories unless you get Alzheimer’s disease and that is a different story.

I recall holding on to clothing.  I now recheck my closet yearly.   If I have not worn it within the year, I will send it to Carriage Town not the Salvation Army.   The Salvation Army resales the items.   Carriage Town gives the items to needy individuals.

8.    Cluttered Email

How does your email look?   Is your email cluttered.   Do you clean it out daily? I discovered my email was very cluttered.   If your email is not maintained it can become cluttered.   Do you receive a lot of spam mail?  That can cause clutter as well.   Clutter comes in all forms.

9.   Slips and Falls

Did you know too much clutter can be the cause of slips and falls?  Living with clutter puts you at risk of tripping over the clutter.   Webmd.com talks about this. They further added that in one study done volunteers who filled out surveys in a neat room were more likely to say they wanted to donate to a charity compared with those who were questioned in a messy room.

10. How to Stop Being Messy

Is your room messy, but you want to change?    It can be done. Start with baby steps, start small, set achievable goals, develop piles to keep, donate, or re-sell, and above all be realistic.
