Writer’s Block Isn’t the End

I am sure all writers have experienced writers block at some time or another. What do you do when you have writer’s block? Where do you get your inspiration from?

Did You Know?

***Intentional***

1. Brain on Strike

Have you ever sometimes felt that your brain was on strike? You want to write, but the topics and words are not flowing. Then there are other days that you can hardly stop writing. I guess you might call that the good days and the bad days. Someone once said that God never wastes an experience. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose. I believe it and I receive it. Know that writer’s block is not the end, but rather just a pause before inspiration flows again. What can you do about it?

Did you know that sometimes a stolen word or line from a book or song can be motivational for you. Have you ever heard a song and found yourself humming or singing that song most of the day? Our choir sung the song last week, “I can depend on God.” For some reason I was humming that song all day and all night. I really was surprised as I turned over throughout that night I was hearing that song in my head. Things like that can give you the inspiration that you need. Sometimes the seemingly little things, but dare I say there is nothing little about God.

1. What About Nature?

Have you thought about hiking the trail or just taking a walk into nature? It is one of the most useful tool for maintaining creativity. Did you know that? According to bewrit.com creatives need to keep a constant well of inspiration and motivation to produce at their best for a long-term period. They further added that studies show that unplugging from the digital world and heading outside boosts creativity by 50%. Can you imagine?

2. A Letter

I recall my pastor suggested that we write letters to 3 people that had influenced us throughout our lives. One of the people that I chose was him. I wrote him a letter. He had explained that sometimes we do not realize how much we influence and impact other’s lives. Also, while writing all 3 letters I had never given much thought about the influence either until I started writing. He also emphasized it is important to let others know how they have impacted your life. Something like that phrase, “Give them their flowers while they yet live.” That is one reason it is important to let people know that you appreciate them.  Now as I thought about the letter for some reason my words started flowing like a river.

Often I purchase water 5 or more cases at a time when on sale. Many times my husband may not be with me. I usually ask the cashier for someone to assist me and put the water in the car. They do this without hesitation. I also, make it a point to let whoever loads my water that I really appreciate them for doing that.

3. Humor

Can you think of a funny instance that you could write about. I recall when I was 7 months pregnant and all stomach.  My sister-in-law and my sister invited me to go to the nightclub with them.  I went with my sister and sister-in-law to the nightclub. I wanted to get out of the house. Soon as we got there a man asked me to slow dance. I did. Afterwards as I took my coat off, he asked me to dance again. To my surprise he commented, “ Oh I did not know that you were pregnant.” My sister very loudly, “Man you did not see that big stomach.” She embarrassed me so. I was not laughing then, but when we looked back at the situation we could laugh about it, because in all honesty I was very large, but that did not prevent me from dancing. I loved dancing and to this day I still do. Whenever my grands and us all get together for birthdays or open houses we dance. What humorous things can you think of to write about?

4. Routine

Do you have a certain routine for writing? Do you have a certain order? Maybe it is time to shake it up a bit and change your usual routine. Maybe switch from writing a certain time of day. Try writing at different times of the day. You may find that some times are better than other. What about your body rhythms? You are an emotional being so there may be some days you feel better than others. Some days maybe you feel sleepy. Other days you may feel more energetic. Take advantage of the energetic days.

5. Humbling Experience

I have talked about this in the past. When I had eye surgery that was a very humbling experience. The first couple of weeks I was on pain pills and slept a lot. I could not even put my eye drops in my eye. My husband had to do it. The most painful for me was I could not get on the computer without having a headache. I thought to myself what if I can no longer write on the computer. My eyes were sensitive to car lights and any outside light. My eyes are still sensitive to light, but thank God for sunglasses. I wear them now when driving.

I kept in my mind that God gives us more than one talent. So I started assessing what other talents I had that did not necessarily involve writing. Still I did not give up. I discover a screen from Amazon that lessened the computer light. I actually dimmed the light on my computer. Next I would get on the computer for just 5 minutes daily and eventually increasing it as my eye became stronger. Eventually I was up to an hour on the computer and no headache whatsoever.   Before I knew it, I was writing again. I give all that credit to God. What humbling experience have you had that you could share with others?
