What is Voter Suppression?

Did you know that there was a time certain people were not allowed to vote? Have you heard some say that their vote does not matter? Do you believe that? Voting is a privilege. Will you take advantage of voting in the Primary Elections, Tuesday, August 5?

Think About This. . .

***Intentional***

1. Did You Know?

Did you know that in December 6, 1865 the 13th Amendment ended slavery within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction, in July 9, 1868 the 14th Amendment extended citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and in February 3, 1870 the 15th Amendment prohibited states from taking away the right to vote on account of race, color, or previous conditions of servitude? This is talked about at cnn.com. They further added that around the 20th century, Southern lawmakers aware that they could not explicitly disenfranchise Black voters, began to impose an elaborate mix of other things, registration requirement, poll taxes, and literacy tests.

2. Jim Crow Era

In 1890 a new constitution was adopted at the Mississippi State Convention, this included a literacy test and poll tax for eligible voters; by 1910 registered voters among African Americans dropped to 15 percent in Virginia. According to History.com literacy tests was one of the most effective tools at suppressing the African American vote. They further added that poll taxes which were $1 to $2 disproportionately impacted Black registered voters and Georgia in 1877 required all citizens to pay back taxes before being permitted to vote.

3. Mail -In Ballots

A study done by social scientists Kevin Morris, Cory Grange, political scientist at Barnard College and Tennessee State University found a Texas law made it much harder to vote my mail according the brennancenter.org. They also added that the state rejected thousands of mail ballot requests and mail-in votes during the 2022 primary election disproportionately those of nonwhite voters.

4. More Voter Suppression

Various tactics for voter suppression include purging voter roles, weaponizing false narratives about voter fraud, lack of adequate polling places, excluding formerly incarcerated people, ignoring language barriers, and misinformation and disinformation. This is according to learningforjustice.org.

5. Restrictive Voting Bills

Did you know that restrictive voting bills are constantly being introduced? Prismreports.org., talks about Florida introducing a bill to create an Office of Election Crimes and Security within the Department of State. This bill would make it a felony for anyone to distribute, order, request, collect, deliver, or possess more than two vote-by mail ballots. They further added that in a bill that was introduced in January that would establish criminal penalties for anyone other than an election official who fills out any section of the voter registration form without the voter’s consent.

6. Ai (Artificial Intelligence) Used to deter Voters

Did you know that Ai(Artificial Intelligence) is being used to defer voters. Wcvb.com stated that in the previous election day in Boston there was a growing concern that artificial intelligence was being used to spread disinformation-lies- to cast doubt on the election process or influence the outcome.

7. Voter suppression in 2025

Did you know that several proposals in project 2025 could affect voter turnout?

 They are as follows:

a. The SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act would require individuals to provide documentary proof of United States citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

b. Criminalization of election administration proposes shifting the prosecution of election-related offenses from the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division to the Criminal Division.

c. Project 2025 impacts the specific demographics specifically aimed to limit the political participation of Black and other marginalized communities.

d. Erosion of trust in elections

e. Weakening the democratic processes

This is talked about at AI (Artificial Intelligence) Overview.

They go on further to talk about Black Codes.

8. Black Codes

Do you know what Black Codes are? These were a set of restrictive laws enacted in the Southern United States after the Civil War (1865-1866) to control the labor and behavior of newly freed African Americans. Some of the key provisions included vagrancy laws, labor contracts, restrictions on movement, limited legal rights, and prohibiting marriage between white and Black people.

9. Decriminalization of Voter’s Assistance

According to Ohiocapital journal.com last year Alabama adopted a law that imposes lengthy prison sentences on paid organizers who help people vote my mail. They further ask the question will Florida judge destroy protections against gerrymandering(the act of politicians manipulating the redrawing of legislative district lines in order to help their friends and hurt their enemies). Governor Ron Desantis urged Republicans in 2022 to adopt new aggressive gerrymanders and this severely curtailed black voting power. Republicans were expected to win 20 of the state’s 28 congressional districts, a four seat increase from the 16 they hold now. This eliminated two of four districts where Black voters had been able to elect the candidate of their choice.

10. Toxic Waste and Voter Suppression

Does toxic waste add to voter suppression? It Might if you live near it. If you notice below according to AI (Artificial Intelligence) overview data indicates that Black Americans are more likely to live near toxic waste sites and industrial facilities compared to white Americans. I also have included sites that are listed in Flint and near Flint, Michigan that have toxic sites as well.

Also note air quality factors into this as well. I recall traveling to Las Vegas by plane for a conference. While I was in Vegas my sinuses were fine. Just as the pilot announced we had crossed Michigan State Lines I had a runny nose immediately. Also another occasion when my husband and I traveled to Florida by car we had no sinus problems while in Florida, but just as we crossed the Ohio State line to Michigan both had runny noses. I would say this is no coincident.

Voter suppression still exists. In 2025 it has taken a different form. It is amazing how people can make some things into law and with other things there is just an amendment to the law and can be taken away at a moment’s notice. It is amazing how swiftly a President can come into law and make laws on executive order. Have you ever asked the question even though something is a law does that make it morally right?

I think about something Joel Osteen said in one of his sermon’s. He talked about being late for an event that he was to speak at. He called them and told them he would be late and was stuck in traffic. To his amazement he said they would send the police to get him. He thought he was going to ride in the police car, but to his amazement the policeman got into his car and was speeding to get him to his destination. He mentioned they were going through red lights and breaking laws, but he was riding with the law. How many laws have been made and people were riding with the law and saying, “this is okay because the law says so?”

This is something to think about.

How is the countries moral compass right now? What do you think?
