Is it possible to eat healthy when you live in a world of fast foods? Does fast food dominate the food menu now? Do you take the time to eat healthy?
Did You Know?
1. Healthy Menus
Do you know what a healthy menu might be? Do you make an attempt to eat healthy? I recall at a family function we had more than enough food. I explained to my family I also made a vegetable tray. Surprisingly to me one of my family members replied, “No one will be eating vegetables we don’t want to eat healthy today.” Have you ever heard someone tell you that? I also recall while waiting in the doctor’s office a man talking on the phone to another. He stated, “The Doctor says my AC numbers are high, but I am ready to go eat, I will worry about that later.”
A few simple healthy eating ideas that Healthline.com talks about are stuffed sweet potatoes, grain bowls, dinner salad, one-pot soups, and whole roasted chickens. I really like the stuffed sweet potato idea or even eating a baked sweet potato. It is so easy to bake.
Did you know that Bob Evans has a three meat Protein Bowl? I have tasted this and it is so good. I am glad that restaurants are becoming more creative. This Protein Bowl is filled with hardwood smoked bacon, farm-famous sausage and hickory-smoked ham and real cheddar cheese on top of roasted sweet potatoes, sauteed spinach, roasted corn and black beans and caramelized onions, with two eggs cooked your way, hollandaise sauce, tomatoes and green onions. Served with multigrain toast. Now the hollandaise sauce really adds to the flavor of this dish. There are 510-530 calories in this bowl and it has 33 gram of protein. I was amazed that this bowl is very tasty and very filling.
2. A Balanced Diet
Are you eating a balanced diet? Do you know what a balanced diet is? A balanced diet might include at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day, basing meals on higher fiber starchy foods like potatoes, rice or pasta, using dairy or dairy alternatives such as soy drinks, eating beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein, choosing unsaturated oils and spreads, and drinking plenty of fluids. This is according to nhs.uRxlive-well. They further add that that eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good healthy, and can help you feel your best. I will be the first to admit I do not always eat a healthy diet, but a healthy diet is something to strive for instead of eating fast-foods all the time.
3. Foods to Avoid
Have you considered developing a good meal plan? Do you know the foods to avoid or to limit while eating a balanced Diet? Wedmd.com suggests avoiding highly processed foods, refined, grains, refined sugars, sweetened drinks, red and processed meats, saturated and trans fats, and high-quality foods have a variety of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, healthy fats, carbohydrates, and protein.
4. Junk Food
I so loved when Michelle Obama was the First Lady. NBC News talked about a government proposal that would ban advertising of sodas and unhealthy snacks in public schools. It was further added that Michelle Obama stated, “Our classrooms should be healthy places where kids are not bombarded with ads for junk food. I also know of a principal that did have the soda vendor machines removed from her school, but this is rare that you see this action taken in schools today.
5. Vending Machines
Are vending machines allowed in schools? Vendinglocator.com talks about how vending machines are, in fact, allowed in schools. In the United States of America, 43% of elementary schools and 43% of middle schools are home to at least one vending machine. They further add that that percentage elevates to a staggering 98% when you take a look at high schools. I have also observed at wrestling events in the high school young children probably age 8-9 drinking soda pops. Sadly enough I recall drinking soda pop and drinking coffee at a very young age as well. Now there is so much more knowledge of the dangers of drinking soda pops and even too much coffee as well.
Know that all vendor machines are not bad, because I love some of the vendor machines in the hospital that have sandwiches, juices, water, and salads as well. So that is a great alternative to soda pops.
6. Start Eating Healthy
You might ask, “When should I start eating healthy?” It might be great to start before you have a life changing event such as a heart attack or stroke. Possibly start by taking baby steps. Possibly checking out healthy food menus. Most adults in the United Kingdom are eating more calories than they need and should eat fewer calories. Nhs.uk mentions this. They further suggest eating lots of fruit and vegetables and eating more fish.
There are many apps that are available to help you keep track of your calories. I love the My fitness app. I discovered I was not eating enough calories which is not healthy either. It is so important to be aware of your eating habits. It is important to be aware why you are eating. Some people may just eat to comfort themselves in the moment. It is important to remember that food is medicine when used in the right way. Someone once said, “If you observer a baby drinking milk form the bottle, the baby stops when he or she gets full.” That might be something that you as an adult can think about. Do you stop eating when you are full? Do you continue to eat even though you might not be hungry? This is something you might want to take a look at.
Make an attempt to start eating healthy today.
