Think Before You Act

Do you know of those that do not think before they act? Are you one of those persons? Why is it important to think before you act?

Thinking Fast

***Good News***

Thinking before you act could mean an instance between life and death.

1. Your Tongue

Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Words do have power. That old saying, “sticks and stones may break my bone, but words will never harm me,” is not quite true. Words can hurt and even scar a person. If you have grown up with negativity all around you in your family it can affect you. You cannot continue to call a child or adult stupid, because they may eventually believe it.

Hebrew 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. I do believe that the word of God is alive. Powerful scriptures in the Bible do affect the well-being of a person.

2. Name Calling

I recall a person calling their own self stupid. I at the time wondered why would that person do that to themselves. I just did not understand. Calling your own-self stupid is just as damaging as calling another person stupid. There are so many alternatives to that such as, “I made a mistake I will and can do better or I am awesome.” Have you ever tried looking into the mirror and telling yourself,” I am beautiful?”

3. Choices

Do you really think before making choices? I am sure you have not always made the right choice. I definitely can say there were times I should have made better choices, but you cannot dwell in the past. Moving forward you may want to be cautious of making better choices. When you look back over your life you may think to yourself, “What could I have done differently?” When looking for a college or new career, you want to make the right choice for you?

After graduating from high school when deciding on college you want to consider, “What is it that I want to do?” What is it that I like doing and find that I am good at that? You may have numerous choices or possibly fewer choices, but either way you want to think and give great consideration to what it is you want to do in your life.

Getting a good education may determine the style that you will take care of your family. A good education may determine whether you live paycheck to paycheck. The paycheck may determine whether you are able to provide all of your family's needs or whether you will have to work overtime or work 3 jobs to provide for the needs of your family.

4. Healthy Food Choices

My child and I came into her school and they did nutritional counseling explaining even though Taco Bell, Burger King, and McDonald's are foods that we may like, they are loaded with the fats that encourage bad cholesterol. I say this because teenagers and adults may like fast food, but that type of eating needs to be done in moderation for the sake of you and your children's health. I recall even though I offered healthy choices to my children, I had one child that was a picky eater and would always buy Taco Bell when she became a teenager. The school did a health screening and requested a meeting with me informing me my child's bad cholesterol was off the charts and it was amazing she was still living.

That was an awakening for me, because I loved Taco Bell before my child was born and now discovered my child loved it as well, but there were consequences for eating too much of it. Now I have 2 children that love tacos including myself. Whenever I visit them now that they are adults we head to the taco house, but I have learned everything in moderation.

Again I ask, " Are you thinking before you act?"

5. Wisdom

Everyone does not show or use wisdom. Merriam-webster.com defines wisdom as the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships, good sense, generally accepted belief, knowledge, a wise attitude, belief , or course of action. I would say this requires some thinking before taking any type of action.

6. In the Moment

Are you living in the moment or are you constantly thinking about the past or the future. Learn to be aware and try to have a balance of being in the moment. Have you ever been somewhere and the entire time you were wishing you were somewhere else? Why not experience the moment and learn from the situation?

7. Perfection

Are you a perfectionist? Just because you are does not mean that you try to make everyone else a perfectionist. Celebrate the differences in people. If we were all alike, life might be very boring.

8. Act or React

Did you know that there is a difference in acting vs reacting? According to writingandwellness.com when you act, you make a conscious choice to do something, then you follow through based on choices of your own principles and goals and you become powerful through that choice. They further add when you react, you respond-often emotionally-to something outside of yourself. Something happens and you react to it without thinking; thus often giving up your power.

They give an example of action as setting up a writing schedule and sticking to it no matter what. You feel powerful and on purpose. They then give an example of reaction as letting someone elses “emergency” interfere with your writing time. You feel frustrated and powerless. At some time or another in your life you may have reacted to a situation as oppose to taking action. I know that I am guilty of doing so.

Again I ask, “Do you think before you act?”
