New Laws In Michigan

 Are you aware that there are a few new laws in Michigan?  Some of which include information about negligent driving.    You might want to take heed and learn about them. I have been seriously thinking about this lately. There have been far too many deaths from drivers texting or talking on their cellphones.

1. Consumer Protection for Online Purchases:

A pair of new bills are aimed at combating scam sales on places like Facebook Marketplace or Amazon, which took effect on New Year’s Day according to freep.com. They further add the Sellers would need to provide some basic banking and tax information to the platforms, and the platforms must show potential customers that sells successfully produced this information. Note that Facebook is not the only place that seller are selling. Sellers are on Instagram and Tik-Tok as well. It is so easy to make online purchases, but oft time those purchases are coming from scammers. So it is important to beware. Online purchasing is not one of my most comfortable ways to purchase, but during the Pandemic that changed. During lockdown I became more comfortable with online purchases, even though I did not do a lot of them.

I still particularly like purchasing in town online and then just going to pick the purchase up. I have done this at Big lot and I can say they are quite efficient and orderly. Note online paying ahead is becoming most popular at fast-foods and restaurants. This is the new wave for the future.

2. Critical Incident Mapping for schools

I am so sorry for those that have lost loved ones or friends through a school shooting. I cannot imagine not feeling safe at school and worrying whether or not a shooter might be lurking nearby. There have been far too many school shootings. This would have been unheard of 100 years ago, but yet here we are.

 According to freep.com effective in March 2023, schools may choose to provide local police and sheriffs with comparable information called “critical incident mapping data.” They further add that this mapping provides a greater amount of detail that likely will make life easier for officers responding to an emergency at a school and clear communication during an emergency saves lives.

I do believer, however, there should be a weapons device check for schools, because we are living in a different time than we were 100 years ago. I also believe that even though it is easier for students to carry their books in backpacks, backpacks should now be clear plastics so that whatever is in the backpack is visible. I believe different times call for different measures.

I would have loved to have a backpack to carry my books when I attended school. It is so much easier and helpful. I often tell this story to my grandchildren and they refer to it as, “back in the day.” I told them don’t worry when they have their children and grandchildren they will tell their story about the Pandemic that they experienced and their grandchildren will say, “back in the day.” History does repeat it self one way or another.

3. Hands Free Driving

How many times have you observed others on their cellphone while driving. Have you ever been driving behind someone that is impaired driving by  weaving or going slightly slower than the speed limit only to discover they are talking and/ or texting on their cellphone while driving? Possible you have been guilty of this.

The house bill of 4250 would impose a civil fine of $100 for a first violation and $250 for a second or subsequent violation, drivers of commercial vehicles $200-500, and additionally $10 of the civil fine would be deposited into the state Justice System Fund. They further add that with this legislation, Michigan becomes the 26^th “Hands Free” state in the nation, making it illegal to hold an electronic device while driving and the Kiefer Foundation will not stop until all 50 states have similar legislation in place. The exception would be 911 calls and emergency.

I already have my hands free unit for my cellphone ordered. I should receive it any day now. I am so excited.

Cellphone technology is great, but there has been so much abuse of it. I am thankful for cellphones, but they must be used with responsibility. I recall texting my grandchildren when they were younger that I was about a block away as I was on my way to pick them up. To my surprise my one grandchild said, “Granny you were texting and driving?” I responded, “No I pulled over in a parking lot and texted you.” They seemed very surprised.

4. Gun Reform Bills now Law

This new law includes requiring a person to keep a firearm stored or left unattended on a premises unloaded and locked, according to clickonDetroit.com. They further added the expansion of universal background checks to all firearm purchases, from handguns to long guns. This brings to remembrance regarding the Oxford shooting in Michigan. I recall taking my grandchildren there for their wrestling meets. I never thought about the danger of a school shooting there until it happened. A school shooting would have been unheard of 100 years ago, but then again we did not have as many guns available 100 years ago to the public.

I understand that there are those that teach their children to hunt animals at a very young age which includes girls and boys. Also, with that teaching comes great responsibility and accountability as well. I have never been hunting. I do not know that if I had started at an early age, I would have liked hunting. I have not desire to hunt for sport though.
