Valentine’s Day Around the World

What are you doing this Valentine’s Day? Have you considered how Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world? Do all countries celebrate Valentine’s Day?

History

According to the History Channel some believe Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate Valentine’s death around A.D.270. They further add that Valentine was a priest in Rome and Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Fauns, the Roman god of agriculture. In addition, in the 18th century there was mass-production of Valentines card.

When I was in school as a child I remember bringing cards and candy to school to exchange with my classmates. It was a great time. As a child I did not know the why of Valentine’s Day, but I loved that it did exist. Since Covid-19 open school is not the same. Instead there was more remote learning during the beginning of the Pandemic.

CUPID:

Have you ever wondered who Cupid was and how Cupid is a part of Valentine’s Day.

According to Wikipedia.org., Cupid means passionate desire, erotic love, attraction and affection. They further add he was portrayed as a chubby boy that acquired a bow and arrow which represented his source of power.

The cbc.ca/kidscbc2 states that some legends says that Cupid carried golden arrows to make someone fall in love, but he also carried another kind of arrow that had a blunt lead tip that would make people fall out of love. They further added that during the 14th to 17th centuries, painters created arts of work showing Cupid as a baby angel and this same version began to appear on Valentine’s Day cards during the late 1800s.

According to History.com Cupid’s mother, Venus (Aphrodite), became so jealous of the beautiful mortal Psyche that she told her so on induce Psyche to fall in love with a monster. It was further added that instead, Cupid became so enamored with Psyche that he married her- with the condition that she could never see his face; but Psyche stole a glance and after cupid fled in anger she searched until they were reunited and granted the gift of immortality.

Valentine’s Day Around the World

1. Romania

I was pleasantly surprised at the different ways that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Romania.   According to traveltriangle.com Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 24th as a day when young couples get engaged and it is a mixture of the spring season; young men and women go to the forests to pick colorful flowers, while other couples wash their faces with snow as a sign of good luck.

2. Japan

Did you know that in Japan on Valentine’s Day the Women are the ones who give chocolates to men; babbel.com further adds that platonic friends are given inexpensive chocolates and the nicer stuff is given to romantic partners then on March 14, (known as White Day) men up the ante and shower women with even fancier gifts and chocolates.  I like that.

3. Statistics

Did you know that 41% will have a romantic dinner at home on Valentine’s Day, 33% will make love, 20% will buy/give fragrance perfume, 16% will give a bottle of wine or liquor, 11% will buy/give lingerie or erotic accessories, and 4% will do nothing special? This is according to ipsos.com.

4. Different Names

Prneswire.com talks about the different names that Valentine’s Day is called around the world; in Mexico it is known as “Dia del amory la Amstad” meaning the Day of Love and Friendship, in Spain Valentine’s Day is known as “San Valentin,” in France it is “Saint Valentin,”, and in Portugal it is referred to as “Dia dos Namorados” or Lovers Day.
