9 Sensory Activities for Adults

Did you know that sensory play is not just for kids?  Sensory activities for adults are a powerful way to relax the mind, reduce stress, and reconnect with the present moment.

Just to See You Smile. . .

    1.   Baking Benefits

How many of you love to bake?  I recall my aunt was from a family of seven.  During my teenage years with her there was only her and me.  I asked her why she cooked large meals?   She would bake several cakes and several pies.   She replied, “Coming from a large family that was all she knew to do was to fix large meals.”  I also remember her making cinnamon rolls.   I still love them today.  I remember smelling the aroma of cinnamon as I could smell it throughout the house.  Whenever I purchase a Cinnabon I think of her amazing cinnamon rolls.

According to diyfairy.com sensory activities can reduce anxiety levels by up to 60% in seniors with cognitive impairments, 85% of caregivers report improved mood in seniors during home care visits, engaging in sensory activities leads to a 50% increase in positive engagement compared to traditional activities, and activities involving smell and touch can increase memory recall events by 25% for seniors with cognitive impairments.  They further added that baking with adults and seniors is not just fun, it is good for emotional and mental health. Measuring, mixing, and shaping dough helps maintain senior’s skills that have early-stage dementia.  Favorite smells like vanilla or cinnamon can bring back happy memories and boost their senses; thus, giving them a sense of purpose and achievement.

     2.   Activities for Adults with Disabilities

Are you or do you know of adults with disabilities?  Disabilitydame.com suggests activities that engage in smell which include smelling a fresh bouquet of flowers, making candles using different essential oils, doing a blind smell test with air fresheners, creating different fruit drinks and smell the ingredients, and playing with scented water beads.

     3.   Sensory Room in Bay City, Michigan

Did you know that there is a Sensory Room in Bay City, Michigan?  Mlive.com talks about it.  I also saw this on the news on television as well.   The Tummy Ache Candy Store, 1116 N. Johnson St.,  Sound in Silence, a dedicated room at the back of the store, has been introduced to provide customers with an opportunity to engage their senses through carefully curated sounds and vibrations.

    4.   Sensory Room for Adults

Have you ever been in a Sensory Room?  Sensoryone.com talks about Virtual Reality as a great way to entertain and engage sensory room users with the use of no headsets.   They further added that visitors can feel the calming effects of the tool just by stepping into the room. Can you only imagine?  Often as people age, they experience a reduction or loss of some of their senses.

    5.  Sensory Boards for Adults

Did You Know that the ideal settings for Adult Sensory walls might include workplaces, therapy centers, home environments, and public spaces such as community centers. Bumblebeesmart.com talks about this.   They further added that you may want to choose calming colors, include interactive features, using sensory panels for a particular age group, create a multi-sensory experience, and consider accessibility.

    6.  Creating a Sensory Room

Have you ever thought about creating your own sensory room?   Your sensory room might include a variety of sensory stimuli such as fidgets, tactile tools, a cozy canoe, weighted lap pads, or a swing.   This is also talked about at bumblesmart.com.

    7.  Sensory Toys for Adults with Autism

Some of the best Sensory Toys for Adults with Autism might include infinity cube fidget toys, mind and body stress balls, power your fun Arggh mini stress balls, YoYa Tos DNA Stress Balls, tangle therapy relax for hand and mind wellness, liquid motion bubblers, stretchable long world kaleidoscope, adaptive sound technologies lectroFan Classic White Noise machines, and Remo hand drums.

    8.  DIY Sensory Tools You Can Create

Possibly you prefer to create your own DIY Sensory Tools.   These Sensory tools might include stress balls, textured fabrics, essential oils, visualization techniques.   Everyou.eu talks about these.  They further added that  when you get started to be sure to choose 2-3 tools you will actually reach for, keep them visible, use them preventatively, and pair them with breathing.

The essential oil sounds inviting to me.   Although I have never tried essentials oils.  It brings to my remembrance of an old cologne that one of my aunts used to wear “White Diamonds.”  Whenever I smell a cologne or perfume like that I immediately think of her.  Just talking about fragrances brings back so many memories.   My father used to smoke cherry fragrance tobacco in a pipe.   I can still smell that fragrance. Do you remember any favorite scents or fragrances from your past?

    9.  Engaging Sensory Activities for Adults

How is your sense of taste?  Have you ever tried experimenting with different teas or coffee?   I am not a coffee drinker.  Some coffees all taste the same to me, but there has been an occasion when I tasted coffee, and it just did not taste good at all.  I have discovered that some teas, even though they say are good for you, do not agree with me.  I've found a tea I love.   It is Earl-Gray tea with bergamot.   This tea is 100% natural, that is something that I like about it and it does taste very good. I feel very relaxed after drinking it as well.    Autismparentingmagazine.com talks about this. They further added you might try creating an ice cream sundae or just try new food with various tastes and textures during meals to widen your sensory experiences.
